News Professor Dongho Kim, Honorary Distinguished Professor, Receives the Prestigious 'Porter Medal' in Photochemistry

  • Date

The Porter Medal is an award given by the European Photochemistry Association, the Inter-American Photochemical Society, and the Asian and Oceanian Photochemistry Association to one of six photochemists who have made significant contributions to the field of photochemistry every two years (https://www.portermedal.com/).

Established in honor of George Porter, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1967 for his work on studying fast chemical reactions by disturbing equilibrium with very short energy pulses, the Porter Medal is awarded to a scientist who has made the most significant contributions to photochemical science, with a particular emphasis on physical aspects, reflecting the interests of George Porter.

Since its inception in 1988, the award has been given to a total of 21 world-renowned scientists in the field of photochemistry. The prestigious nature of the Porter Medal can be inferred from the distinguished list of past recipients.

Professor Dongho Kim, the first Korean scientist to receive the Porter Medal, was recognized for his pioneering work in elucidating the phenomenon of reversal of molecular aromaticity and antiaromaticity through spectroscopic methods. He will receive the Porter Medal and deliver a commemorative lecture at the '29th IUPAC Photochemistry Symposium' to be held in Valencia, Spain, this coming July.
