Abstract: Porphyrins are versatile redox-active building blocks for the construction of molecular wires. They can coordinate a wide variety of metal cations, providing a way to tune their electronic, optical and magnetic properties. Axial coordination to metalloporphyrins enables the template-directed synthesis of pi-conjugated nanorings. This talk will present recent work on the synthesis and electronic properties of porphyrin-based molecular wires and nanorings, such as the 18- porphyrin nanoring template complex shown below.
