Abstract: Finding the ground states of molecules and materials remains one of the central challenges in computational chemistry and condensed matter physics. Quantum computers offer a promising path forward, particularly through the quantum phase estimation (QPE) algorithm. A critical factor in the success of QPE is the preparation of a suitable initial state, as the algorithm’s efficiency depends on the overlap between this state and the true ground state of the Hamiltonian. Unfortunately, states prepared by classical methods often suffer from exponentially small overlap, significantly limiting performance. In this talk, I will discuss strategies for constructing improved initial states that enhance the success probability of QPE, thereby enabling more efficient quantum algorithms for ground-state discovery.
