Abstract: Chemistry is the science that explores the molecular world. It includes understanding how molecules communicate with each other for processes such as assembly, disassembly, signaling, and transformations. Central to all these functions is molecular recognition, which primarily occurs through non-covalent interactions While relatively strong non-covalent interactions have been well known for over a century, much weaker interactions have only recently identified and studied, thanks to advances in analytical techniques and instrumentation. My group has been particularly interested in the development of molecular models and synthetic receptors to investigate the nature of primarily hydrogen-bonding and π-stacking interactions, which will be discussed in the lecture.
